What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement and a healthy spine.

Pilates focuses on strengthening the powerhouse and dynamic, moving stretches where the muscles contract in one direction and lengthen in the opposing direction. The powerhouse is the deep abdominal muscles, back and hip muscles.  You will learn how to isolate each of these muscles- individually and together and how to recruit the muscles to support you in daily activities.

People often “shake” in Pilates.  This is what happens when you isolate weak muscles that haven’t been worked.  Most other forms of strength training work on the larger “mover” muscles, but in Pilates the body is working to achieve stabilization first before the larger muscles are recruited. The neuromuscular pathways that control and monitor the postural muscles are activated much more than under normal daily circumstances. This activation automatically gives control of the muscles back to the brain and spinal cord so that you can start using them properly in everyday life and sporting activities!

Who is Pilates for?

People often discover Pilates after an injury through the recommendation of a Doctor or Physical Therapist.  Pilates usually decreases side effects from chronic conditions and reduces atrophy which results from injury. Athletes also use Pilates before and after their sporting events to improve strength and agility.  Every day people use Pilates to get a challenging and gratifying workout. Most people who practice Pilates regularly agree it has significantly increased their quality of life.  Pilates is for everyone.

Private Pilates Sessions

Tonya designs a Pilates program around your fitness level and goals. These sessions are done privately with no distractions. Postural and strength assessments are done, and exercises to improve muscular imbalances and meet specific client goals are implemented. Tonya will take you through a series of exercises using all of the Pilates equipment as well as mat exercises. Pilates sessions also include dynamic stretches which increase muscle performance and improve joint mobility. Injuries and chronic conditions are always taken into consideration when designing the program.


Duet Sessions

Duet sessions are private sessions on all Pilates equipment – where you and a partner work out together and split the price of the session. Enjoy the benefits of Private Pilates Training with the motivation that comes from training with an exercise partner at a reduced rate!


Pilates Equipment Classes

Equipment classes combine work on the reformer, stability chair, spring board, orbit, and suspension straps for up to four people.

Tone every major muscle group while paying special attention to proper execution, bio-mechanics, alignment and symmetry so that you leave the class feeling rejuvenated, balanced and energized – all at the reduced class rate!
Classes run for six weeks and are paid for in advance since space is limited.

Core Circuit Classes

These classes make you sweat! They are circuit based to keep your heart rate up and add a cardio component.  Each person does an equipment station for two minutes and then cycles to the next station without rest.  These classes use the Pilates equipment as WELL as rings, the surge, and kettle-bells.  Classes run for six weeks and are paid for in advance since space is limited.

Health Assessment and Body Analysis

Optimum health is found and sustained with a dedication to both increased activity levels and nutritionally balanced dietary habits. Upon request, a state of the art body composition assessment machine, Bio-Electrical Impedance Analysis, is used to accurately measure your body fat percentage and Body Mass Index. Your BASAL Metabolic Rate is calculated to determine your caloric needs based on your goals. Meal planning can also be provided.
